First Appointment

After booking your first Osteopathy appointment at Littlehampton Natural Health Centre appointment you will receive 2 emails from us, the first confirming your appointment is booked and the second will contain a link to an online questionnaire asking about medical history, daily activities, medication, and surgeries, giving your Osteopath a chance to assess your notes prior to your first appointment.

At your first appointment, we like to spend some time getting to know you, your reasons for visiting the clinic, and what you are hoping to achieve. Before we can with any treatment your Osteopath will run through your online questionnaire, building a detailed personal history and also discussing your symptoms in detail, helping them build a complete picture of you.

Your Osteopath will then perform a physical examination to get a good overview of how your body is functioning. This physical can include assessing your joint range of motion, muscle strength, gait, skin sensations, and neurological function. They will also perform some specific orthopedic tests to help us determine the cause of your symptoms. If necessary the Osteopath can also run through a cardiovascular, respiratory, and abdominal screening.

At the end of the examination, your Osteopath will explain their initial findings and if appropriate proceed with treatment. Depending on the results of the examination your Osteopath may find it necessary to refer you for additional investigations which could include either X-Ray, Ultrasound or MRI imaging, should this be the case your Osteopath will discuss your options with you fully.

Treatment Plan

Depending on your case your Osteopath will either discuss their treatment plan at your first visit or should your Osteopath require more time to assess your case, or to see how you respond to the first treatment, they will discuss this at your first follow up appointment. Your recommended treatment plan will depend on all of the information your Osteopath has gained through your history, symptoms, and examination.

We will then perform a physical examination to get a good overview of how your body is aligned, how your joints are moving and work out what is causing your symptoms. The physical can include assessing your joint range of motion, muscle strength, gait, skin sensations, neurological function and perform some specific orthopaedic tests. If necessary we will also run through a cardiovascular, respiratory and abdominal screening. These tests will help us get an overall view of your health and help us with our diagnosis.

We will then explain the findings from our tests and explain our full care plan – if you are still happy we can proceed with treatment.

What Does Osteopathy Treatment Involve?

Osteopathic treatment is gentle and effective, being tailored to each specific patient and using precision and minimum force. As well as hands-on treatment you may also be provided with advice on how to maintain the benefits of the session going forwards. This can include stretches and lifestyle advice to help you stay in good health.
As a new patient, your Osteopath will spend time understanding your problem, your medical history, and any previous treatments you have had as well as conducting clinical testing where necessary. A full osteopathy consultation allows the treatment to be given in a way that is unique to you, as no two bodies are the same. They will also assess the balance and integrity of your whole musculoskeletal system to fully comprehend where underlying causes may lie.
With this information, the Osteopath forms a considered plan for treatment and can apply it with gentle precision. Their extensive training combined with the information gained following a consultation makes it possible to encourage your body’s healing faculties to overcome the problem.
