Custom earplugs and hearing protection
Custom earplugs at Littlehampton Natural Health Centre are made from impressions of your own ears, with advice from Hearing Aid Audiologist Tim Davies matched to the job: sleep, swimming or noisy environments. The point is a comfortable, well-fitting product you will actually wear — not a generic one-size plug that leaks, hurts or stays in a drawer. If you already have impressions, please bring them along, as Tim will assess whether they are still suitable to use for your custom earplugs.
An appointment in Littlehampton includes a look at the ears, a clear recommendation of product type, and ear impressions when it is safe to take them. Finished plugs are checked for fit. You do not need a hearing aid to use this service.

What to expect at your appointment
What do you need the plugs for?
Sleep, swimming, music, DIY, industrial noise, motorcycling, or hearing aids you already wear.
What it tells us: the seal, material, and filters required.
Why it matters: a swim plug and a musician’s filter are different products. The use comes first.
Examination of the ears
Otoscopy (and video otoscopy where useful) to check for wax, infection, the eardrum, and whether the canal is suitable for impressions.
What it checks: whether it is safe to take a mould today.
Why it matters: impressions should not be taken into an infected, discharging, or badly blocked ear.
Advice on the right product
Sleep plugs, swim plugs, filtered noise, or musician’s protection, and when a custom mould is worth it versus a well-chosen generic.
What it is: an independent recommendation, not a single catalogue item.
Why it matters: custom is for fit and comfort. It is not automatically better if the use does not need it.
Ear impressions
Soft impression material is placed in the canal under view, left to set, then removed as a mould of your ear.
What it does: captures the shape the laboratory will work from.
Why it matters: a poor impression means a poor plug. This is why the ears are examined first, and the material is placed carefully, not packed blindly.
Manufacture
The impressions go to a laboratory to be made into the agreed product (often with a second short visit for collection and fitting).
What it is: the custom part of “custom.”
Why it matters: you should know the likely wait and whether a fitting check is included before you leave the first visit.
Fitting and seal check
The finished plugs are tried in the clinic: comfort, insertion, and whether they stay put for the intended use.
What it tells us: the mould matches the ear, and you can get them in and out.
Why it matters: a custom plug that you cannot insert, or that leaves a gap, is no better than foam.
Care and when to replace
Cleaning, storage, and the fact that ears and materials change — plugs may need replacing if they loosen, crack or no longer seal.
What it is: how to keep a product you paid to have fitted.
Why it matters: most early problems are insertion and hygiene, not the laboratory.
When impressions are not taken
Active infection, discharge, significant pain, a known perforation that makes packing unsafe, or wax that should be cleared first. Tim will rearrange or refer rather than take a mould that day. Also, if you already have previous impressions that are suitable, Tim may not need to take new ones; this will be discussed at your appointment.
What it is: knowing when not to proceed.
Why it matters: a delayed impression is better than an injured ear.
