What the EmSella chair is — and who it may not suit

The EmSella chair is at Littlehampton Natural Health Centre, on Granville Road. You do not travel to Chichester for it. Sessions are led by Amelia Altenburger, an HCPC-registered physiotherapist with extra pelvic-floor training through Mummy MOT and POGP. You remain fully clothed. Chair time is typically 30 minutes.

This is a briefing before you book, not a diagnosis. Full fees, phases and FAQs sit on our EmSella pelvic floor treatment in Littlehampton page.

What the chair does

BTL EmSella is a padded chair that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM). While you sit, that field makes the pelvic-floor muscles contract and relax in a repeating pattern. Intensity is adjustable; Amelia sets it with you.

The manufacturer describes a 30-minute session as producing thousands of supramaximal contractions, often summarised as “equivalent to 11,000 Kegels”. That figure is a manufacturer comparison, not a clinic promise that one visit matches months of supervised physiotherapy. Published EmSella research and manufacturer materials also quote outcome figures in the region of 95%, 75% and 66% in studied groups. Those are not Littlehampton cure rates.

EmSella can be useful when the pelvic floor is weak, you struggle to find or load the muscle yourself, and you want a clothed option with no internal examination during the chair session.

It is not surgery, not a diagnosis, not a weight-loss treatment, and not a guarantee of dryness.

What a session feels like

Wear comfortable clothes. You sit on the chair. Most people describe a strong pulsing or buzzing through the pelvic floor, not sharp pain. Tell Amelia if anything feels wrong. There is normally no recovery period. You can usually drive and return to the rest of the day.

Chair sessions do not include an internal examination. If you need that kind of assessment — or you have pain, tightness, a tummy gap after birth, or you cannot coordinate a contraction — start with pelvic floor physiotherapy in Littlehampton.

How we book it

We do not start a course of chair sessions on a guess.

  1. Free preliminary telephone consultation. A short call with Amelia to see whether EmSella is even in the right territory.
  2. Initial consultation, £45, in person or by telephone. Symptoms, history, medications, previous surgery, and your goals. You should leave with a plan: chair, physiotherapy, both, or a GP or NHS referral.

Only after that conversation do we discuss individual sessions (£80), maintenance (£66), a 6-plan (£396) or a 12-plan (£792). Reviews with Amelia are listed at £25.

Who it may not suit

EmSella is not automatically right for pelvic pain, a tight or overactive pelvic floor, or every bladder problem. Muscles that cannot relax often need physiotherapy first. Tell us before you book if you are pregnant, or if you have an implanted electronic device.

Men are seen after assessment, including some people with leakage after prostate surgery.

If you are postnatal, a Mummy MOT-style physiotherapy appointment is often the better first visit if you also have tummy-gap, scar or back-pain concerns.
